Satyajit Ray (1921 - 1992) was an Indian film- maker. Ray was drawn into independent film- making after meeting French film-maker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film
Bicycle Thieves. Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and short films. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer and film critic. He has also authored several short stories and novels.
